Assembly Guide

The openScope Traveller Imaging Platform User Guide and Assembly Manual may be found here: User Guide and Assembly Manual. Below is condensed version to get familiar with the Traveller.

Allocate ~2 hours. Wear gloves; protect optics.

Step 0 — Toolkit

Use only the supplied tools: Phillips PH1 (T01), 2.0 mm hex (T02), 2.5 mm hex (T03), 3.0 mm hex(T04)). Use tools only where explicitly instructed.

Step 1 — Foundational openFrame (OF01)

  • Place OF01 on a sturdy table (≥110×80 cm), in a low‑vibration, low‑dust, low‑ambient‑light room.
  • Remove baffles C4 and C5 if present.

    Warning: Once assembled, do not move the openFrame.

Step 2 — Stage & Transillumination (OF02)

  1. Loosen S02/S03 on OF01 using 2.5 mm hex (T03). Do not remove completely.
  2. Align arrow labels (→1 with →1; →2 with →2) on OF01 and the underside of OF02. Seat onto dowel pins until you feel a click and the stage sits level.
  3. Tighten S02/S03 using 2.5 mm hex (T03).
  4. Adjust pillar height using the transillumination height screw as needed.

Step 3 — Transillumination Source (OF03)

  1. Loosen the two top screws on OF03 using 2.5 mm hex (T03); keep them in place.
  2. Orient USB connector toward the pillar.
  3. Press OF03 onto the mounting posts on OF02; avoid pressing LEDs directly.
  4. Apply even pressure along the perimeter and tighten screws using 2.5 mm hex (T03)**.

Step 4 — Cameras (Kikker & Rana)

  • Kikker (OF09): remove OF10 dust cover; thread onto Kikker port, label up; hand‑tighten only.
  • Rana (OF11): remove OF12 dust cover; thread onto Rana port, label up; hand‑tighten only.

Step 5 — IRIS‑400 Fluorescence (OF04)

  1. Place OF08 pedestal ~20 cm left of IRIS port on OF01.
  2. Fit OF06 ring adaptor into OF04 and secure with three grub screws using 2.0 mm hex (T02).
  3. Insert OF07 tube into the IRIS port on OF01 up to the guideline (do not exceed).
  4. Support the OF04 body on OF08; rotate pedestal to adjust height until it gently supports IRIS‑400.

Step 6 — Power & Data Cabling

  1. IRIS: connect OF22 OUTPUT → OF04 with OF19. Power OF22 via OF23 (align arrows up; keyed connector—do not force).
  2. Rana: OF15 USB → OF11 and hub OF17.
  3. Kikker: OF16 USB → OF09 and hub OF17; connect OF20 12 V DC to OF09.
  4. Hub: OF17 → Laptop port P01.
  5. Transillumination: OF18 USB‑C → Laptop port P02.
  6. Place OF21 slide holder on stage (magnetic).
  7. Remove two transport screws on multiband cube (both sides) and two on mirror slider using 3.0 mm hex (T04). Store safely.

Step 7 — Finalise

  • Connect laptop power OF28; power Kikker and IRIS.
  • Install only required objectives in the turret; rotate turret manually.
  • Proceed to the Software Guide.
